Canada’s senior artistic gymnast team won five medals at a weekend World Challenge Cup event, including one gold from pommel horse champion Thierry Pellerin of Lévis, Que.

Pellerin scored 14.350 points — almost a full point ahead of the next competitors — to seal first place in the event. Zoltan Kallai of Hungary and Koki Maeda of Japan both scored 13.500 to win silver and bronze, respectively.

“I was a little stressed during the qualifications and wasn’t able to focus only on my routine,” said Pellerin. “During the finals I told myself to relax and that helped me get a higher execution score on my routine.

“I really showed what I’m able to do, it’s going to help the judges recognize me and I’m making a name for myself.”

Isabela Onyshko of Brandon, Man., and Laurie Denommée of Laval, Que., both finished the competition with a silver and bronze medal after solid performances in the beam and floor finals.

Onyshko scored 13.100 on floor for the silver medal and 12.600 on the beam for third place. Denommee also scored 12.600 on beam, but had a higher execution score than Onyshko, putting her in second place.

Denommee won bronze in the floor event with a score of 13.000.

Zachary Clay of Chilliwack, B.C., finished fifth in the pommel horse final while René Cournoyer of Repentiguy, Que., was eighth on vault and high bar.
