Alberta’s police watchdog says an armed man who was shot last week by RCMP on a First Nation has died.

Mounties said the 27-year-old was flown to hospital in critical condition following a confrontation on Samson Cree Nation on Thursday.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response team says in a news release that the man died Saturday.

It says Mounties were responding to a call about a man firing a gun in a rural area of the community and an officer found a man carrying a rifle walking down a road.

The agency says another officer approached from the opposite direction in a police vehicle, and the man walked toward the vehicle with the rifle pointed up.

One of the officers fired a gun and the man was hit.

ASIRT says it’s looking for people who may have witnessed the confrontation between the man and police.
