A heliskiing operator in northern British Columbia says one person has died and three sustained injuries in an avalanche Tuesday afternoon.

A statement from the Last Frontier Heliskiing Team says five people were caught by the slide in the area of its Bell 2 lodge located 360 kilometres north of Smithers.

It did not provide details about the condition of the three people who were injured.

The team says it’s working with authorities reviewing the incident and its members’ thoughts are with the families and friends of those affected by the tragedy.

BC Emergency Health Services says it was notified of an avalanche at 3:37 p.m. Tuesday and crews transported one patient to hospital via air ambulance, but it did not provide any further information.

Avalanche Canada has warned about an extremely unstable snowpack across most of B.C. this season, during which more than a dozen people have died.
